The Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS) cluster is a vibrant community of research scholars and educators strongly supported by a dedicated staff of administrators. HASS faculty represent a wide range of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. Recognising the value of a multi-dimensional education for success in every field of endeavor, HASS provides SUTD undergraduates with grounding in the methods of social and cultural inquiry, in rigorous evaluation of truth claims and in informed decision-making. By offering learning experiences that integrate the disciplines of the humanities, arts and social sciences with SUTD’s engineering and architecture pillars, HASS encourages students to acquire the capacity for self-reflection and critical thinking in order to nurture leaders deeply aware of the social role and impacts of innovations in the fields of technology and design.

During their undergraduate career, students take seven courses in HASS. All students are enrolled in two core courses, taken in Terms 1 and 2 of their Freshmore year. Beginning with Term 4 students choose one HASS elective in each term. Students enjoy an extensive range of courses to choose from. Visit our course page For our course offerings.

The choice of electives will continue to expand as additional faculty join HASS and as SUTD develops an extensive range of subjects taught in collaboration with MIT, Zhejiang University (ZJU) and Singapore Management University (SMU).

In order to facilitate hands-on digital education and research, HASS has created IdiaLab as a place for learning and experimentation.
